Cape Talk’s John Maytham stars in Superfan, a solo comedy-drama written by Mike van Graan and directed by Adrian Collins. After a sold-out premiere run at the Antique Theatre and Bar, the play moves to the Baxter’s Masambe Theatre for a short season.
Maytham plays Oliver Wilson, who owns three service stations and pitches an advertising company on a campaign to give back and build social cohesion. Springbok rugby under Rassie Erasmus is his example and inspiration, as proof that transformation and excellence need not be opposites. The play also draws on the documentary Chasing the Sun, which chronicles the Springboks’ 2019 World Cup win.
Van Graan says you don’t have to be a rugby fan to enjoy it, and the aim is to inspire audiences with a vision of what South Africans could achieve with their shared resources under the right leadership. It is the second collaboration between Maytham, who commissioned both pieces, and van Graan, after To Life, With Love in 2025.
