The Suidoosterfees is all about capturing the essence of the Mother City. The festival is named after the ‘suidooster’; the persistent, dry and iconic wind that sweeps through Cape Town. It is an annual event of fun, colour and vibrancy that celebrates local culture and heritage. Established in 2003 it continues to grow and attracts locals and visitors looking for a proudly South African cultural experience.
The festival usually happens around April and May at the Artscape Theatre and features an array of performances ranging from dance, drama, comedy to music. Extras such as art exhibitions and historical tours can also be enjoyed. The popular kids’ theatre keeps little ones entertained with puppet shows, stories and more.
In adapting to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of Suidoosterfees happened in the form of a classic drive-in theatre at the Atlantic studios in Cape Town in November. Artists performed their work on an outdoor stage which was filmed for the silver screen for attendees to enjoy. This was a hit with the festival followers.
