Event information
The Stellenbosch Museum introduces visitors to the cultural and architectural history of Stellenbosch through the Village Museum and the VOC Kruithuis. Together they illustrate the town’s domestic, social, and military past.
At the Village Museum, guests tour four restored homes dating from 1709 to 1850, each presented by guides in period costume. Schreuderhuis, the oldest documented townhouse in South Africa, depicts early 18th-century life. Blettermanhuis reflects the world of a VOC magistrate and includes an exhibition on slavery. Grosvenor House represents the early 19th century with displays on donated objects and photographs, while Berghuis showcases mid-19th-century interiors.
The VOC Kruithuis, housed in an 18th-century arsenal, displays antique firearms, swords, cannons, and other military artefacts.
The museum was proclaimed in 1962 and is a province-aided institution. Its exhibitions highlight the colonial and social roots of Stellenbosch while also linking to broader histories through projects like the Kayamandi Creative District House Museum, where community members share lived experiences in their own homes.
