State Of the National DisAster (SONDA) is a sharp satirical comedy that uses humour, physical theatre, and social critique to reflect on the realities of post-Apartheid South Africa. Created and performed by Philangezwi “King SMS” Nxumalo, the solo production delivers a fast paced and thought provoking theatrical experience.
Through a blend of mime, clowning, and expressive physicality, the performance tackles issues such as unemployment, crime, poverty, and political failure. While the subject matter is serious, the show maintains a strong comedic edge, using laughter as a tool to engage and provoke reflection.
Inspired by protest theatre traditions, SONDA embraces a raw and minimalistic style that places the performer and message at the forefront. The result is a bold and accessible production that resonates with audiences, inviting them to reflect on the state of the nation while finding humour within its contradictions.
