Event information
The Soweto Theatre is situated in the cultural precinct of Jabulani. The construction of the theatre was completed in May 2012 as a legacy project of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It is situated right next to the iconic Jabulani Amphitheatre which is known for hosting political gatherings, jazz festivals in the 60s and Isicathamiya and Maskandi music in the 80s.
Boasting modern architecture signalling a new era, the Soweto Theatre serves its immediate community first. The programme includes theatre productions, music, dance, poetry, comedy, seminars and festivals. The culturally varied content pays special attention to the youth and is geared towards community development. The programming of setwork seasons focusses on grade 11- 12 literature and brings children to the theatre.
The venue has three theatre spaces. The Red Theatre is a 436 seater with a fixed stage and seating. It has a full orchestra pit. The Blue Theatre is a flexible 140 seater. The Yellow Theatre seats 80 while the forecourt can accommodate up to 500 people.
