Event information
The South African State Theatre is the largest theatre complex in Africa boasting six theatres: the Opera, the Drama, the Sibusiso Khwinana (formerly the Momentum), the Arena, the Rendezvous and the Intimate theatre. The venue, built on the old Market Square in the heart of Pretoria, celebrates 40 years in 2021.
It hosts a colourful variety of the performing arts from Opera, Dance and Musicals to drama, music, poetry, comedy, children’s theatre and everything in between. It is also home to three main festivals: the Youth Expressions Festival, which commemorates youth month in June; the Vavasati International Women’s festival, celebrating women theatre-makers in August; the Mzansi Fela Festival, promoting home brewed arts and urban culture in December.
These festivals help revitalize the inner city, attracting visitors from across Gauteng and the country.
