Smuts House Museum

Event information

Doornkloof was the historical home of statesman and philosopher, General J.C. Smuts. Now called the Smuts House Museum, it seeks to faithfully represent his lifestyle and multifaceted career and to promote the holistic vision which he expounded in his life and writings.

Most of the house's interior has been recreated in the period 1909 to 1950, with thanks to Smuts family members who donated furniture, pictures and equipment. Artefacts and gifts given to Jan Smuts during his world travels are exhibited. Smuts converted a former billiard room to his study or library, and it contains many ancient books on law, philosophy, botany and religion.

There is also a caravan park and a tea-garden where tables are set in the shade of tall trees. A footpath leads from the garden to Smuts Koppie, a rocky hill behind the house where his ashes are scattered. A granite obelisk has been erected here.

Home to Smuts for over 40 years, the museum reveals much about the life and the spirit of this statesman, and the venue is regarded as an excellent historical timepiece.
