Step into history walking through the doors of the Satyagraha House which peace activist, Mahatma Gandhi, graced the hallways of over a hundred years ago.
What was once the habitat of Gandhi is now a guesthouse that caters to all. Situated in Orchard, Johannesburg, the Satyagraha House offers a unique experience by integrating a guesthouse with a museum.
Satyagraha is a Sanskrit term for the concept of peaceful protest, the method of resistance employed by Gandhi to counter colonial rule in India. The house was built in 1907 by German architect and close friend of Gandhi, Hermann Kallenbach.
A hundred years later, the house has been restored to revive its original spirit of peaceful reflection while providing innovative contemporary accommodation. The original house, named the Kraal, resembles a traditional African farm; a cottage was later added to the property before a modern extension was built in 2010.
The Satyagraha House forms part of South Africa’s historical heritage and provides a unique glimpse into the life of a historic icon. It is available to be booked for private occasions should guests wish to have the intimate house to themselves for the duration of their stay.
