Opened in February 2005, the Rupert Museum houses the private art collection assembled from the 1940s to the early 2000s by the late Dr Anton Rupert and his wife Huberte Rupert. Anton Rupert was a South African businessman, conservationist and philanthropist, and one of the country's most prominent 20th-century figures; since 1964, foundations established through his Rembrandt Group allocated a portion of profits to the promotion of education, art and the preservation of heritage buildings.
The museum's collection spans over 400 artists and more than 2,000 works, with paintings, sculptures and tapestries as the predominant mediums. Artists represented include Maggie Laubser, Irma Stern, Alexis Preller, Walter Battiss, JH Pierneef, Ernest Mancoba, Ezrom Legae, Peter Clarke, Lucas Sithole and Anton van Wouw, alongside European works by Auguste Rodin and Kathe Kollwitz, and French tapestries by Jean Lurcat.
The museum also manages the Rembrandt van Rijn Art Foundation collection of more contemporary South African art and the Huberte Goote collection of Modern French tapestries and Italian paintings and sculpture. The 2,000-square-metre building was designed by South African architect Hannes Meiring, commissioned in 2003. Three main exhibition halls are complemented by a MakerStudio, library, museum shop and on-site cafe. Free on-site parking is available.
