Event information
Route 67 is a heritage walk in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape that combines visual arts, urban design and heritage themes. The route was opened to the public in 2011 by the Mandela Bay Development Agency as a way to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public life and contribution to the freedom struggle.
The walking route includes 67 public art pieces by 67 different local Eastern Cape artists in a total of 67 giant steps. It begins at the Campanile in Strand Street and winds its way through the Port Elizabeth CBD to the biggest South African flag in the world, the Great Flag in the Donkin Reserve.
The art pieces include a large metal cut out of Nelson Mandela leading a line of voters, sheltered booths in the shape of sails, a giant set of pipes that turns wind into melodies and a massive mosaic at the base of the pyramid. Some of these art pieces are still works in progress.
