Cape Town Opera’s latest work draws on the opera by French composer Charles Gounod, itself a version of William Shakespeare’s beloved romance.
Gounod, one of the most influential French composers of the late nineteenth century, is celebrated for his lyrical charm, refined orchestration, and mastery of theatrical storytelling – setting scenes, building tension, and guiding the drama to its tragic conclusion.
However, the first Romeo et Juliette production coming to the Mother City is not just a retelling. While still reminiscent of an opulent, Renaissance-era Italy, Verona transforms into a grungy, urban South Africa, where serene European design meets gritty Cape Town graffiti. The ballroom becomes a penthouse nightclub, and the famous balcony is swapped for the colourful houses of the Bo-Kaap.
Adapting the classical opera for a modern audience, the dark, angry underground of this Romeo et Juliette contrasts with the burgeoning connection between the forbidden lovers, serving as the final stage for the final tragedy.
Returning to Cape Town Opera after 16 years is director Marcus Desando, alongside set & costume designer Leopol Senekal (Tosca), choreographer Tailyn Ramsamy, and renowned conductor Kamal Khan. The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will bring the opera’s deeply moving, romantic music to life.
