This floodlit memorial to Cecil John Rhodes stands on the slopes of Devil’s Peak on the northern flank of Table Mountain. Built in 1912, the monument was designed by Sir Francis Macey and Sir Herbert Baker.
It incorporates Doric columns, the classical architecture revered by Rhodes, with eight lions cast in situ by J.W Swan. These were modelled on those protecting Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square.
Forty-nine steps mark each year of his life, and pay tribute to his drive and determination. The structure is situated on the Groote Schuur Estate and is built from Cape granite quarried from the mountain. A bronze statue of a horseman rearing, the Statue of Energy, makes an eye-catching statement at the foot of the steps.
Rhodes Memorial is a national landmark which provides panoramic views out across the Cape Flats, the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountains. A number of hiking trails and contour paths lead directly from the site.
