“REMO – a true story about the day I died” is a theatre performance written and performed by Rameez Cassiem. The production brings Cassiem’s real life story of survival, resilience, and adaptation to the stage. Blending personal storytelling with elements of hip hop theatre such as rap, beatboxing, poetry and spoken word, the performance moves between humour, vulnerability and reflection.
The show begins with a devastating car accident that left Cassiem in a coma for a month while doctors prepared to switch off his life support. Against the odds, he woke up. REMO follows the aftermath of that moment and the life that followed, including Cassiem’s later diagnosis with multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN), a rare and incurable nerve disease that causes progressive muscle weakness.
Cassiem’s background as a performer and comedian brings moments of levity to a story that also explores loss, spirituality, mortality and the daily realities of living with disability. Directed by Kim Blanché Adonis and produced by Daniel Mpilo May Richards, this performance was originally staged at the Baxter Masambe Theatre in 2025 and received strong reviews.
The production is recommended for audiences aged 16 and older due to mild language and potentially triggering themes.
