Prince Albert Open Gardens

Event information

Prince Albert Open Gardens showcases more than a dozen private gardens across the small Karoo town, built around the theme of sustainable gardening in an arid, water-scarce climate. Now in its fourth year since launching in 2023, the event has grown from its inaugural showing to draw hundreds of visitors annually to gardens ranging from organic vegetable plots and aloe collections to indigenous veld gardens and interconnected multi-garden spaces.

Beyond the garden viewings, the weekend includes talks, guided walks and interactive workshops led by regional gardening and conservation specialists, covering topics such as veld restoration, indigenous plant use and water-wise landscaping suited to the Great Karoo's harsh climate. Previous editions have included guided walks at the nearby Wolwekraal Nature Reserve and the Swartberg Pass.

A portion of ticket sales supports Wolwekraal Nature Reserve's conservation work, and the event also employs local youth as garden ambassadors, giving them exposure to the tourism and hospitality sector.
