The Pretoria National Botanical Garden is 76 hectares of natural vegetation situated in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.
The garden is divided into two sections, the frosty south-facing section and the north-facing warmer section, each presenting a different world to the visitor and botanist. A paved nature trail gives access to the natural vegetation on the ridge, which includes a diverse range of indigenous fauna and flora.
50 hectares of the total area is devoted to a developed garden, using almost exclusively South African plants. All the flowering plant species to be seen, including 50 per cent of the South African tree species, as well as different biomes, theme gardens and a waterfall, come together to form a botanical tapestry.
There are two restaurants in the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, namely the African Pride Café, which offers exclusive dining, and Milkplum Café, which offers coffee, traditional home bakes and light lunches during the week as well as buffets, braaivleis (traditional barbecued meat) and potjiekos (traditional stew) are served on weekends. Visitors can however picnic at their leisure and enjoy the scenery.
The Botanical Gardens also hosts Old Mutual Music in the Gardens, a concert series that has presented a myriad of local talents including The Parlotones, Freshlyground, Prime Circle, and Shortstraw as well as international acts including Billy Talent.
