Poetry of Belonging

Event information

Literary collective Red Wheelbarrow curates an evening of spoken word poetry featuring vangile gantsho, Siphokazi Jonas, Keith Oliver Lewis, Naidene Lottering, Athambile Masola and Thalente Ndlovu, hosted by Lisa Julie and Jacques Coetzee.

gantsho is a poet and psychosocial practitioner whose work often addresses grief and healing. Jonas is an award-winning writer, poet and performer whose credits span theatre, music and page poetry. Masola is a historian and poet recognised for work that recovers Black women's histories of resistance. The remaining performers bring backgrounds spanning slam poetry, performance art and community-based spoken word.

The lineup spans a range of poetic styles, from confessional and lyric forms to performance-driven spoken word, unified loosely around themes of home, identity and belonging. As a curated showcase rather than a panel discussion, the format favours live performance over conversation, with each poet given individual stage time.
