The Observatory Improvement District (OBSID) has opened a community composting site on a parcel of land beneath the railway bridge on the corner of Oak Street and Ive Street, on land leased from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa. The facility gives residents a place to drop off organic household waste, which is then processed into compost.
Accepted materials include fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, crushed eggshells, small amounts of bread and rice, cut flowers and dead plants. OBSID CEO Matt Tyrrell has described the initiative as a way to offer residents a sustainable route for managing organic waste while producing a usable product for gardens and green spaces.
OBSID has partnered with a local garden maintenance business, which also runs a nursery from the same site. Once processed, the resulting compost is sold to the public, with proceeds going toward maintaining the facility and supporting the business partner.
The site forms part of OBSID's broader mandate to provide cleaning, greening and public safety services across Observatory as a City Improvement District.
