Event information
Through a guided heritage walk, Last Night in Boho explores the cultural history of Observatory. Hosted in partnership with the South African Astronomical Observatory, the tour traces the area’s transformation from a scientific outpost into a long-standing hub of artistic, countercultural and student life.
Beginning at the gates of the SAAO, the walking route covers roughly three kilometres and moves through the streets surrounding Lower Main Road. Along the way, participants encounter stories tied to the suburb’s Victorian scientific roots, its role as a social and cultural meeting point during the late twentieth century, and the eclectic community spaces that continue to define the area today.
Blending historical detail with informal storytelling, the tour highlights how Observatory has maintained a reputation for creativity and social experimentation across generations. Stops along the route examine the evolution of local landmarks, gathering places and cultural institutions that have shaped the neighbourhood’s identity.
A portion of each ticket supports the local initiative Obs Can Feed You, connecting the tour to ongoing community projects in the area.
