Event information
Liberty Promenade hosts the 15th edition of its annual showcase for learners from Mitchells Plain and the wider Cape Flats, in the centre’s Food District. This year’s theme is En Route to Change, and each participating school uses familiar street signs as inspiration for a performance about the choices young people face.
Groups of five to eight learners from each school use music, poetry, storytelling and movement to explore topics such as decision-making, resilience, responsibility, online behaviour and the freedom to change direction. Each school also creates a street-sign-inspired installation about choice, life experience and safer online behaviour, which is displayed at the centre.
Thirteen schools take part: Beacon School for LSEN, Caradale Primary, Cascade Primary, Eastville Primary, Eisleben Road Primary, Jamaicaweg Primary, Lentegeur School for LSEN, Mondale High, Oval North High, Portland High, Rocklands High, Spine Road High and West End Primary.
The schools compete for a share of R80,000 in cash prizes. Afterwards the creations form a Community Choice exhibition, where shoppers can vote for their favourite performance and installation and enter to win R10,000. Seating is limited, so arrive early.
