‘Memento Mori’ with VOX

Event information

Choral group VOX Cape Town presents Memento Mori, a programme built around themes of mortality, loss and remembrance, staged at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church on the eve of All Saints' Day. The concert draws on the centuries-old memento mori tradition, pairing choral works by Henry Purcell, Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Camille Saint-Saëns, Alfred Schnittke, John Tavener and film composer Hans Zimmer with music by South African composers Hendrik Hofmeyr and Franco Prinsloo.

Artistic Director John Woodland introduces the programme with pre-concert listening notes, offering context on the ideas and connections shaping the evening before the main performance begins. Organist Mikyle Adams performs throughout the concert and returns for a standalone late-night organ nocturne once the choral programme has ended.

Original artwork created specifically for the concert by Casey Driver accompanies the programme. Following the main performance, audiences are invited to stay for a glass of wine and conversation with the singers before the closing nocturne.

Ticket price includes admission to all three segments of the evening: the listening notes, the main concert and the late-night organ recital.
