Event information
Sound artist Matlali Matabane and blacksmith Conrad Hicks collaborate on the Bijou Forge Residency, to create an immersive interdisciplinary project exploring the intersection of sound, sculpture and space.
Hosted at The Bijou Forge, the residency brings together Matabane’s electronic sound practice and Hicks’ metalworking and sculptural processes in a series of experimental performances and installations.
Several months of residency culminate in a series of performances titled Of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air in which Matabane’s electronic instrumentation and extended sound techniques interact with the textures, rhythms and acoustic qualities of the working forge. These iterations take the form of immersive sound installations shaped by the forge’s industrial environment.
Guests are invited to move through the space and interact with elements of the installation, creating a participatory encounter where sculptural objects, electronic sound and the architecture of the forge operate as a single evolving composition.
