The details
Highly regarded in Muizenberg, the Masque Theatre is Cape Town’s leading community theatre. It is home to many of the community theatre societies in the city as well as being a professional venue-for-hire. It hosts amateur productions of all genres in its 174 seater space. In 2008 Agatha Christie’s courtroom drama: Witness for the Prosecution, marked the theatre’s hundredth show.
The Masque Theatre was founded by Bertie Stern in 1959 with the aim of encouraging voluntary participation in all forms of theatre by all people. It burnt down in 1997 and took two years to rebuild.
Bertie’s Ghostlights is the theatre’s online initiative, birthed during the global pandemic. It curates a range of theatre-inspired events such as the 'In Conversation' series featuring talks with theatre luminaries, ranging from Pieter Dirk Uys to UK theatre star, Lucian Msamati.
