Marimba Jam is a female-led NPO that invites beginners and music lovers to learn how to play the marimba in a fun lesson at the Montebello Design Centre. In between jam sessions, the guide and founder Kiara shares the history and journey of the instrument through Africa. Questions and interaction are always welcome.
The workshop begins with a short introduction and lesson about the different types of marimba and what sets them apart. Players then choose a style of the marimba to play between soprano, alto, tenor or bass and learn to play a popular or traditional song. Sessions include a 10-minute snack and water break and once players can play the song, a video of the individual or group is taken.
Marimba Jam provides more than one instructor for larger groups and can move the activity indoors in the event of rain. The location is child friendly as there are shaded playgrounds in the area.
