Event information
Presented by the College of Magic in partnership with the City of Cape Town, Makin' Magic is a family stage production performed by more than 50 students and graduates of the Claremont-based institution. The College of Magic is a nonprofit organisation founded in 1980 that provides performance-arts training to young Capetonians from across the city's communities, with a focus on building confidence and life skills through the magical and theatrical arts.
The show is set in the eccentric laboratory of the Professor, a character played by Cape Town actor Matthew Baldwin, whose experiments descend into comic chaos when a mysterious monster appears. The cast responds with a mix of close-up illusions shown on live video, large-scale stage magic, and comedy sequences, with audience participation woven throughout. Creative Director Chad Findlay describes the production as showing young people that extraordinary things can emerge from the simplest ideas and materials, recycled objects and everyday items form the raw material for much of the magic on stage.
The production runs for one hour and 35 minutes including a 30-minute interval. Secure parking is available at the Artscape Theatre Centre. The venue is accessible from the Cape Town CBD and is served by MyCiti bus routes along the Foreshore.
