Event information
Zimbabwean guitarist Louis Mhlanga brings his distinctive fingerstyle playing to Café Roux, leading a five-piece ensemble through a set blending jazz, Afro-pop and acoustic tradition. Mhlanga is widely regarded as one of Southern Africa's finest guitarists, known for a self-taught picking and plucking style he describes as the African guitar, which has influenced a generation of younger players.
Active since the 1970s, Mhlanga has recorded and performed internationally, including collaborations captured on the album Place of Hope alongside George Duke, James Ingram, Al Jarreau and Dianne Reeves, and a live duo recording with Vusi Mahlasela. He previously ran Zimbabwe's Ethnomusicology Trust, developing national teaching programmes for traditional and contemporary Zimbabwean music.
For this performance, Mhlanga is joined by Basi Mahlasela on percussion, Michael Phillips on bass, Randall Skippers on keyboard and Rob Watson on drums, framing the evening as both a musical showcase and a reflection on heritage, resilience and mentorship.
Café Roux operates a seated table format, with tables booked under the same email address grouped together automatically.
