Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary situated in Midrand is more than a zoo. The sanctuary is a safe space where animals can be appreciated up close and where interaction between humans and animals is encouraged. It serves as a peaceful haven for animals who were previously threatened by electric fences, cars and human aggression, as well as an educational environment for the community.
Lory Park Zoo is home to big cats such as the cheetah, jaguar, Bengal tiger, lion, puma and the Siberian tiger. Smaller cats like the ocelot as well as species of birds and reptiles can be seen at the park. Encounter opportunities are always happening at the zoo, as the team believes these are learning moments, and each moment should be an informative one. Encounters with owls are available on weekends at 11am to 2pm. Reptiles are also out and about ready to meet guests during weekends. Funds collected from encounters are donated to conservative initiatives such as Vulpro and REST.
Visitors who want to interact with the animals should not wear open-toed shoes, hanging jewellery, long untied hair, or loose fabrics such as dresses. Pregnant women are not advised to participate due to disease.
