Event information
The Kolgans River Barge Restaurant offers a unique dining experience on the Breede River, combining authentic Afrikaans cuisine with serene natural surroundings. Guests can enjoy the tranquil river views, try their hand at fishing for carp, barbel, or bass (fishing permitted for booked or staying guests), or observe a variety of bird species along the riverbanks.
Cruises operate Monday to Saturday by prior booking, with reservations required at least 48 hours in advance. The main barge accommodates up to 16 people, and the smaller barge has a capacity of 8. All cruises are SAMSA-approved and vary in duration, with most lasting 1.5–2 hours, except for the 1-hour sundowner cruise. During colder months, only lunch cruises or trips are available.
The Kolgans, named after the Afrikaans term for the Egyptian Goose, was launched in 2001 as a creative addition to the owners' farming income. Built from repurposed materials, including oak from a felled tree and scaffolding from a local church renovation, the barge reflects ingenuity and resourcefulness. Its maiden voyage on November 30, 2001, marked the beginning of its journey as a floating restaurant.
