Event information
The Klein Karoo is the ideal location for stargazing due to the lack of light and city pollution in the Northern Cape nature reserves. It offers one of the best stargazing experiences in Southern Africa. On this night-time experience dedicated rangers or guides share interesting facts about the stars and celestial bodies that can be observed while armed with a telescope for superior viewing.
There are constellations to view throughout the year. During summer guests can observe Orion alongside Taurus the bull and the Seven Sisters. During wintertime, Scorpius, Antares the red giant star and the Southern Cross come into view. Astronomers and space enthusiasts are excited to see neighbouring dwarf galaxies and other deep-space bodies including Orion and Carina Nebulas and Tuc47, another impressive star cluster.
Stargazing can be enjoyed at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve or booked from tour operators such as Klein Karoo Day Tours. Tours are ideal for all ages as guides love to explain the unique characteristics of the Karoo sky to children for a fun interactive astronomy lesson.
