Event information
The Kagyu centres of Southern Africa follow the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism headed by His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje.
Open to everyone, regardless of background, the centres are deeply entrenched in the communities they reside in. Their teachings focus on meditation and various aspects of dharma including traditional practices of chanting, visualization and mantras.
Activities offered at Kagyu Samye Dzong Johannesburg are specially focussed on Buddhist teachings; Tara Rokpa Therapy; the environment and humanitarian aid. The centre runs regular events, courses and retreats such as the Zoom Retreat with Donal Creedon; meditation on Thursday evenings or Meditation Instruction and Practice with Alan Muller as well as Green Tara Prayers.
Residents and community members of the Kagyu Samye Dzong Johannesburg in Kensington started the Rokpa Soup Kitchen in 1995. They deliver soup, peanut butter sandwiches and fruit in the inner city of Johannesburg once a week.
