Event information
Jonathan Butler, South African-born jazz guitarist and vocalist, presents an evening that celebrates a career spanning more than five decades. Known for his smooth style and iconic hits, Butler remains one of the country’s most recognised musical exports.
Rising to international fame during the 1980s with songs such as Lies and Going Home, Butler became the first black South African artist to attain mainstream radio play across different audiences during apartheid. His work bridges genres including jazz, R&B and gospel, and has earned him Grammy nominations as well as collaborations with artists such as George Benson and Kirk Whalum.
The programme offers a retrospective of Butler’s most significant songs alongside personal reflections on the journey that carried him from the Cape Flats to global recognition. Guitar artistry, vocal warmth and storytelling combine to create a performance that honours both his roots and his international career.
