The Johannesburg Botanical Garden, situated in the suburb of Emmarentia, spans across 125 hectares, making it one of the largest urban green spaces in South Africa.
Established in 1969, it serves as both a recreational area and a hub for botanical education. The garden features a diverse collection of indigenous and exotic plants, with over 30 000 trees representing nearly 4500 different species.
Visitors can explore themed gardens, including a succulent garden, a Shakespeare garden, and a medicinal garden, each offering insights into different aspects of botany. The Rose Garden is a notable highlight, showcasing a variety of rose cultivars.
The garden's water features, including Emmarentia Dam and two large reservoirs, provide a habitat for aquatic life and add to the aesthetic appeal. Birdwatchers will find a variety of avian species, attracted by the garden's lush vegetation. The Emmarentia Dam is an area for water sports such as canoeing, fishing and sailing small boats.
