Event information
The Jittery Citizens is the most active improv comedy company in Johannesburg.
Being the city’s premier improvisation group, it was co-founded in 2012 by comedian and Wits University comedy performance and physical theatre graduate Claudine Ullman together with Alex Radnitz.
Its vision is to make improv comedy as popular as stand-up comedy in the country. It’s a slow process but over the years the Jittery Citizens has established regular slots at leading venues such as the Market Theatre and smaller boutique spaces like The Dunkelder.
The group specializes in the Armando style of long-form improv which takes the form of an existing type of theatre like a musical or play and often includes a guest performer or celebrity comic. The troupe has also established a strong corporate presence through their training workshops and private performance bookings.
Due to the restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Jittery Citizens expanded their reach to online audiences through the launch of online courses teaching improv to individuals, as well as companies. The cast consists of great local comedic talents, such as Toni Morkel, James Cairns, Daniel Buckland, Mpho Osei-Tutu, Mongi Mtombeni and Bruce J Little.
