Event information
One can see more than 600 shells of species from all over the world at the Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum. Housing one of the largest collections in South Africa, it features its huge variety of shells in numerous glass cases. These include the legendary cowrie, the rare paper nautilus, tiny baby jam tarts and a new species of cone.
The museum was opened in 1998 with a display of the collection of Jeffreys Bay local Charlotte Kritzinger, who dedicated many years to harvesting shells. Over time the collection was enhanced through donations and exchanges. A recent addition is a display of Jeffreys Bay micro shells, which are believed to be unique in the region. The museum also features other artefacts.
Local shells and shell craft can be purchased outside the museum from shell shops and stalls.
