Event information
Mission for the Inner City continues its events celebrating Cape Town’s vibrant culture and communal spaces with the return of Jazz in the City. Continuing the theme of bringing together artists from different eras of African music, the latest edition brings together Dizu Plaatjies and Sky Dladla.
Plaatjies is a renowned Xhosa musician, best known for founding the African percussion group Amampondo, with songs like Ku Kanjani and Majola remaining important folk songs today. The group represented South Africa during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in 1996, and performed at the historic Wembley Stadium during the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute.
Dladla is another African percussion expert, hailing from Gugulethu in the Mother City, and proficient in many indigenous instruments like marimbas, mbira, and uHadi. A UCT alumnus like Plaatjies, Dladla recently appeared on Zolani Mahola’s A Good Time and was heavily involved in the Wakandan theme songs for the popular online game Marvel Rivals.
With the historically significant Homecoming Centre as its base, Jazz in the City offers attendees the chance to experience the past, present, and future of South African jazz and folk through a performance that centres indigenous sounds and storytelling.
