Event information
Walk down the Isimangaliso Wetland Park beach in St Lucia in search of leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles in a turtle tour safari. The Isimangaliso Wetland Park is a World Heritage Site and the first of its kind in South Africa. While hunting for turtles, guests may spot other wildlife such as leopards, kudus, honey badgers and buffalos.
The tour kicks off with an open game drive to Cape Vidal. Here a ranger will give an introduction and teach guests how to interact safely and respectfully with protected species such as the turtle.
Leatherback sea turtles are encountered on the safari, these creatures are the largest sea turtles on earth, weighing up to 900 kilograms. The species is also the oldest and has been around for 150 million years. Loggerheads get their name from their large log-shaped head.
During the tour participants will observe the female turtles preparing their nests to lay their eggs and hear interesting facts about their migration habitats, diets and history from rangers. The tour lasts between six and eight hours, with times varying according to tides. A light dinner and refreshments are included and seats are limited to 10 people.
