Norval Foundation presents the second exhibition in a multi-part series on the life and legacy of Irma Stern, one of South Africa's best-known modernist painters. Drawing on Stern's archive and collection, the show covers the period after she left Germany during the rise of anti-Semitism.
The focus is on paintings made while Stern travelled between KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Eswatini, shown alongside related charcoal drawings and sculptures. The selection gives a closer look at her work within southern Africa rather than the wider journeys that often define her reputation.
The series is a multi-year collaboration between Norval Foundation, the Irma Stern Trust and Nedbank. It began with A Life of Displacement, which ran until August 2026, and is planned as four exhibitions over two years.
