Established in 1895, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park is the oldest game park in South Africa along with nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly known as St Lucia Reserve). From having only 25 rhino at its inception, the Reserve now has the highest population of both white and black rhino in South Africa, protected by regular monitoring and patrolling.
The Park covers some 96 000 hectares and is characterised by hilly topography. The northern section of the reserve is noted for its wide variety of wildlife, birdlife and flora.
Apart from guided game viewing drives and walksm there are self guided auto trails and Guided walks can be especially rewarding in the early morning and late afternoon. There is also a 40 seater boat on Hluhluwe dam which takes visitors on guided trips twice a day. Visitors interested in Zulu culture can visit the community areas outside the Park.
