Event information
History’s Walk, the original Whitfield House, is where guests can find Johann Hamman, a registered Kwa-Zulu Natal provincial guide and military historian. Hamman offers three battlefield tours in Dundee, including the Blood River and Talana, and the Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift.
Johann Hamman is more than knowledgable when it comes to the military history of Dundee. He has two maternal ancestors who died in the Battle of Magersfontein in the 1800s, and one who was killed in the Battle of Wagon Point and the Battle of Spioenkop in the 1900s. Having studied military history and international politics, his areas of expertise are the Anglo-Boar War, the First War of Independence, and the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. His vast knowledge, family history, and personal experience led him to lead educational tours of the battlefields in Dundee.
Hamman offers three battlefield tours, the first is the two-day Big Four Tour, where Blood River and Talana will be toured on day one, with Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift being toured on the second.
The Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift tour, the second option, visits the two sites and takes visitors to community shops in the area to view handmade crafts and books. The Spioenkop and Mount Alice Tour is an extensive one with a great deal of travelling. A trip to the Ladysmith Siege Museum is also included.
