Event information
Cape Town folk-baroque ensemble Here Be Dragons presents Folk 201: Landings, the second instalment in its world music concert series. Founded and directed by violist Jan-Hendrik Harley, the ensemble performs vernacular contextualisation of mainly 16th-century art music on period instruments: recorders, baroque violin, viola, viola da gamba, cello, mandolin, guitar and percussion.
Folk 201: Landings is structured around the Age of Exploration, tracing the musical routes of Scandinavian voyagers toward Iceland, Spanish adventurers into the New World, Portuguese sailors crossing to Brazil, English settlers in North America, and French explorers in the northern frontier. The programme moves between origin and destination, examining where these melodies came from and how they changed through cultural encounter and displacement.
The ensemble comprises Joshua Frank (recorders, guitar), Annien Shaw (violin), Jan-Hendrik Harley (viola, mandolin, director), Rosamund Ender (cello, viola da gamba) and John Pringle (percussion). The programme follows Folk 101, the ensemble's debut concert, which sold out its initial run.
