Event information
This field hockey stadium serves as a premier venue for local and international hockey events. The facility features four astroturf sports fields with state-of-the-art synthetic surfaces and excellent drainage systems. Stadium seating accommodates 1700 spectators in the hockey section, with the main pitch recognised for its smooth playing surface and lighting pylons for evening matches.
The complex was upgraded in 1996 as part of South Africa's bid to host the 2004 Olympics. The design by ACG Architects in association with GAPP Architects earned the SAIA Award of Merit in 1996 and the SAIA Award of Excellence in 2008. Further upgrades completed between September 2024 and January 2025 included new astroturf installation and infrastructure repairs.
The venue historically hosted soccer matches during the National Football League era, with Cape Town City and Hellenic among clubs that used the stadium. Smaller grass fields adjacent to the main complex continue to serve local amateur soccer clubs. The facility currently operates as the training ground for Cape Town City Football Club while primarily hosting hockey tournaments including international fixtures.
A pavilion, tuck shop and public toilets serve visitors, with wheelchair access available.
Observatory Station is located approximately 380 meters from the stadium. The venue is situated between Liesbeek Parkway and Willow Road, with limited onsite parking available.
