God’s Window

Event information

God's Window is a popular vantage point along the Drakensberg escarpment at the southern extremity of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. It stands at an altitude of 6,000 feet. Here, sheer cliffs plunge over 700 metres to the Lowveld.

From this escarpment a mostly unbroken rampart of cliffs opens a vista into the Lowveld expanse and escarpment forests. On a clear day it is possible to see over the Kruger National Park towards the Lebombo Mountains on the border with Mozambique. A viewing platform near the car park also gives extensive views down the gorge to the plain below, however you will have to hike up a narrow pathway along the escapement to get there.

Panoramic views encompass canyons, rock formations and waterfalls, making this a popular pitstop for artists and photographers. There are curio stalls and toilet facilities at the parking area.

Viewing sites dot the length of the Blyde River Canyon, and there are numerous walks, hiking, horse and mountain bike trails. Be sure to bring refreshments for strenuous walks.

This particular outlook point was featured in the film The Gods Must Be Crazy.
