Forest Industry Museum

Event information

This is South Africa’s only forestry museum, making it one of Sabie’s main attractions. It documents the history of the timber industry in the area, as well as the discovery of gold nearby. Exhibits also showcase how technology has influenced the development of forestry over the years.

The museum gives an overview of the birth of forestry and the role trees play in nature. It offers information on land preparation, and the planting and management of unutilized land, while educating how people can add value to an environmentally friendly industry. It also maps the relationship between people and trees, the ecological value of forests, and sustainable methods of running a timber industry.

Displays include concentric rings of a 250-year-old yellowwood disc; an old frame saw; miniature wooden shoes carved by a Second Anglo-Boer War prisoner on St Helena; the history of match production; and a small replica of a Pretoria Dutch Reformed Church made out of matches.
