Footprints to Freedom brings children from the UCT Saturday Morning Music Outreach Programme onto the Baxter stage alongside their teachers, combining storytelling, music and dance. The performance opens with umcimbi, a traditional ceremony marking indigenous knowledge, community and cultural belonging, before moving into a Freedom Festival segment built around self-expression.
The programme traces an arc from conflict to reconciliation over its course, closing with a piece titled Not Yet Uhuru, framing freedom as an ongoing journey rather than a completed one. The performance situates the young participants within a longer lineage of struggle and progress, carrying forward work begun by earlier generations.
The UCT Saturday Morning Music Outreach Programme provides free music tuition to children from communities around Cape Town, with performances such as this giving participants a platform to showcase skills developed through the programme on a professional stage.
