Event information
Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary offers a permanent refuge for abused, neglected, and elderly donkeys, providing a safe, natural environment where they can live with respect and dignity. Each donkey is cared for meticulously, with daily checkups, hoof and eye cleaning, and regular feeding, including specialized diets for older or underweight donkeys.
The Sanctuary welcomes visitors to explore its facilities and enjoy a variety of offerings. The Coffee Shop serves light meals such as toasted sandwiches, scones, muffins, cheesecake, and beverages, including teas, coffees, milkshakes, and locally made alcoholic options like Eseltjiesrus Wine and Saggy Stone Craft Beer. Vegetarian, vegan, and children’s options are also available. Visitors are permitted to bring their own wine, with no corkage fee.
Additional attractions include the Donkey Shop, which features donkey-themed gifts, souvenirs, and local products such as wines and craft beers. Visitors can also enjoy guided donkey visits, serene strolls around the sanctuary, birdwatching with over 80 species, and a tranquil memorial garden. Children’s activities, such as colouring pages and donkey toys, are provided to engage younger visitors.
Group visits, including school trips, are welcomed with prior arrangement, and commercial groups are charged a nominal fee. The sanctuary also runs adoption and fostering programmes, providing individuals the opportunity to care for these animals.
