Event information
The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre is based at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban as part of the university’s drama department.
Founded in 1981 by the late professor Elizabeth Sneddon, it is recognised as the first theatre to service a drama department at an academic institution. It is now also available for hire by outside companies and hosts a variety of independently produced events such as dance shows, children’s theatre, corporate functions, music, comedy, drama and poetry.
The theatre is closely associated to the university’s Centre for Creative Arts, which produces internationally renowned events: The Time of the Writer Literary Festival; the Durban International Film Festival; the Jomba Contemporary Dance Experience and the Poetry Africa festival. The theatre serves as one of several venues selected to host these festivals.
It has a 400 seater auditorium complemented by a coffee shop and the Wellington Tavern, which is popular for sundowners on Durban’s hot and humid evenings. Wheelchair facilities are available. No children under three are allowed.
