Event information
The DUT Art Gallery can be found on the Steve Biko Campus in the Cecil Renaud Theatre above the Library. The gallery forms part of the Faculty of Arts and Design and regularly hosts B-tech and M-tech student exhibitions from their Fine Art, Jewellery and Graphic Design departments.
The gallery’s primary objectives include education and research with the aim of serving the broader arts community with visual arts as its primary tool. It is responsible for the safekeeping, documentation and conservation of the institution’s collection of artworks.
The Gallery’s permanent collection was initiated 1982 and consists of paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics, textiles and mixed media works.
The university’s collection includes anonymous carvings, clay pots, beadwork, wooden and bronze sculptures, contemporary paintings and installations. The collection continues to grow through donations and purchases that have relevance to current commentary.
Their exhibition calendar features work by established artists, students and community-based projects. It welcomes external exhibitions, including travelling shows and curated exhibitions, and is not limited to Durban-based projects. Francesca Verga curates.
