Drostdy Theatre

Event information

Opened on 2 March 2015, the Drostdy Theatre is a self-funded independent theatre established by Ingrid Howard and Hano Smit in a Victorian-era building on the corner of Alexander and Bird Streets in central Stellenbosch. Howard has an extensive background in television, production and directing; Smit serves as Technical Director.

The building previously functioned as a hotel, a home for the aged and office space before being converted into a performance venue in six weeks. The auditorium seats approximately 250 people and is designed for an intimate relationship between performers and audience. The programme spans musicals, dramas, dance shows, comedy, jazz and live music, in both Afrikaans and English, and has hosted performers including David Kramer, Amanda Strydom and Bongeziwe Mabandla.

A second space, the 90-seat Upstage lounge, is equipped with sound, lighting, two 55-inch HD screens, a kitchen, full bar and air conditioning, and is available for hire for private events, conferences and cabaret performances. Tickets are available through Webtickets. Street parking is available in the surrounding area.
