Opera UCT stages Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Baxter, following the fallout when the title character's latest conquest ends in the murder of the woman's father, unleashing a supernatural force that ultimately confronts him with his own mortality. The opera moves between comedy and terror as it explores seduction, individual freedom and defiance of social convention.
The production is staged by French-American director Talia Stern, with set and costume designs by Allegra Bernacchioni. The Opera UCT cast and chorus perform alongside the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Peggy Wu and Jeremy Silver.
The opera is sung in Italian, with captions provided in English and isiXhosa, widening access for local audiences beyond the original libretto's language.
