Event information
Die Letterhuis on Aswater Farm invites calligraphers and hobbyists for a karoo retreat and art experience. The house is a homely calligraphic gallery surrounded by scenic art walks with various lettering painted on spots around the farm and a word labyrinth. Letterhuis offers calligraphy, brush lettering and watercolour workshops and art retreats that are hard to find anywhere else in the country.
A Record and a Song is their 2-day workshop focussing on watercolour and brush lettering led by Willie Schlechter and Heleen de Haas. Botanical painting is practised with no previous experience required. Participants are guided through all the stages of drawing and painting so that accurate renditions are achieved.
The brush lettering workshop integrates words into their painting with a dancing brush. By the end, guests will have acquired an alphabet they personally designed. A pointed brush lettering 2-day workshop is also offered at the farm, as well as a coloured pencil botanical drawing workshop where guests learn how to observe and draw the various flowers on the farm.
Letterhuis often hosts a creative retreat where participants become still, take photos of the beautiful scenes on the farm and translate them photographic images with colour. The course is not only designed for artists, but for people wanting to draw nearer to God and record responses to the Holy Spirit’s revelations. It is a time of enjoying rest creatively and lasts 2 days.
Die Letterhuis workshops include materials and a light lunch, but exclude the pointed no.4 brush, brush pens and accommodation.
