The gold medal-winning South African exhibit from London's RHS Chelsea Flower Show returns to Stanford as the centrepiece of the Stanford in Bloom spring festival. This year's display, titled Life After Fire, was designed by landscape designer Leon Kluge and creative artist gardener Tristan Woudberg, who led Team South Africa to gold at Chelsea for the third consecutive year.
The exhibit recreates a post-fire fynbos landscape, using around 20,000 cut protea stems alongside burnt protea branches, indigenous bulbs, orchids and flowing water elements to illustrate how fynbos regenerates after wildfire. The display also includes botanical artworks from the Grootbos Florilegium Collection, a body of illustrated work documenting the plant life of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
The exhibit is brought to Stanford by Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, with support from the Rupert Nature Foundation, Southern Sun and Hazendal Wine Estate. Visitors have the opportunity to meet Kluge and Woudberg and hear directly from the team behind the design.
All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Grootbos Foundation, a registered non-profit supporting biodiversity conservation and community education in the Overstrand region.
